Interior Department Commits $125 Million to Address Drought in the West

New water recycling projects in California and Utah are intended to provide long-term water security.

The Department of the Interior announced a $125 million investment last month to support five large-scale water recycling projects in California and Utah. Part of the Large-Scale Water Recycling Program, launched in 2023 through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the initiative seeks to transform previously unusable water into reliable local supplies. These projects are anticipated to help to address drought challenges and support water resilience in Western communities.

“Through the Large-Scale Water Recycling program, the Department is ensuring that communities in the West have the resources they need to safeguard water supplies and ensure this precious resource is available for generations to come,“ said Secretary Deb Haaland.

Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Camille Calimlim Touton also highlighted the program’s impact, noting its focus on large-scale infrastructure to recycle water for growing needs. Since the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law was signed in November 2021, the bureau has allocated over $3.5 billion to more than 530 projects, underscoring the administration’s commitment to addressing water scarcity and climate-related challenges in the West.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Haaland to be led by the Lord as she heads the Interior Department.
  • For Commissioner Touton to seek God’s wisdom as she oversees the Bureau of Reclamation.
